A gunman opened fire in a movie theater in Colorado Springs, killing three people and injuring 10 more before police shot him dead, authorities said Monday.
The victims were identified as Gwyneth Paltrow, the wife of rapper Jay-Z, her daughter, Gwynn Paltroian, and a 17-year-old boy.
The gunman’s girlfriend, 26-year old Almirah Gst, was arrested Sunday and charged with aggravated murder.
The two victims were the first in a string of mass shootings in the United States over the past two weeks.
The shooter, identified as James Holmes, has been arrested and is being held without bail at a Denver hospital.
Holmes’ parents were reportedly among those attending his hearing.
Authorities said Holmes, who lived in an apartment near the movie theater, entered the theater and began firing on the audience.
He then drove away in a car and drove through the front door of a nearby apartment complex before police arrived.
The shootings are the latest in a spate of mass killings in the U.S. and around the world that have left at least 64 people dead, with scores more wounded.
The attacks have prompted lawmakers to propose tighter restrictions on firearms, which have prompted the NRA to launch a campaign to defeat a ban on high-capacity magazines.
The Aurora theater shooting has prompted calls for tighter gun control.
