Ontario’s new plan to make paid sick time available to people who can’t afford it won’t be a big deal for the millions of Ontarians who currently don’t have it.
But that hasn’t stopped the province from pushing back on the new federal policy that would make paid leave available to anyone who works in the province.
The province says it’s working with the federal government on a framework for how it will manage the implementation of the new policy, which is expected to go into effect in 2017.
It says it has no plans to raise rates for people who are already on paid sick leaves.
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has been pressing the federal Liberals for the plan, which the Liberals say would provide benefits to people with a sick child or a family member.
We’ve heard from the federal ministers, and it’s very important that we understand what they’re saying, said Kathleen Wynne in an interview with The Associated Press.
“We are in talks with them, and we will continue to do so,” she said.
In an email to CBC News, the Department of Employment and Social Development (DESD) says that while it supports the federal proposal, it is currently not in the position to provide paid leave for Ontario residents.
If Ontario were to implement a new paid sick day, it would be a change to its existing policy, DESD spokesman David Lister said in an email.
As such, Ontario’s policy is not compatible with the policy that the federal Government announced on Thursday.
Instead, Ontario would be in a position to adjust the system based on how it’s implemented in other provinces, Lister wrote.
Desd says it is committed to implementing the plan in the same manner as other provinces that have implemented a paid sick policy.
I think there are a lot of factors that come into play, said Andrew Brown, a University of Toronto health economist who studies family leave.
You need to have a really robust social policy that’s based on evidence, and I think Ontario has done that, he said.
“The system has a lot going for it.
It’s really good for the economy and really good in terms of people who get sick.”
